One of my favourite things to do in South Dakota is to visit Mount Rushmore. You cannot visit South Dakota without taking a trip to Mount Rushmore.
Carved into the Six Grandfathers Mountain, now known as Mount Rushmore, this iconic national memorial pays tribute to four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Initially started in 1927 and completed in 1941, the monument features 60-foot-tall faces of the presidents.
To make the most of your visit, consider taking one of the ranger-guided tours offered at Mount Rushmore. These tours provide valuable insights into the history and significance of the monument. The best time to avoid crowds is during the months of May, September, and October. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Mount Rushmore and witness the incredible artistry that went into creating this national treasure.

Custer State Park: Embrace Nature’s Splendour
One of my favourite South Dakota tourist attractions is Custer State Park. If you are lucky enough to visit South Dakota and visit Custer State Park, then you will understand why it is so special.Â
Situated approximately 30 miles southwest of Rapid City, Custer State Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. With its rolling hills, granite peaks, and crystal-clear water, the park offers a wide range of activities for visitors. Whether you’re planning a day trip or an overnight stay at the historic Custer State Park Resort or one of the campgrounds, there’s something for everyone.
Hiking, biking, fishing, boating, hunting, horseback riding, swimming, and snowshoeing are just a few of the activities available in Custer State Park. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the park’s famous herd of nearly 1,500 free-roaming bison. Sylvan Lake, a picturesque destination with calm waters and stunning rock formations, is a must-visit spot within the park and is often chosen as a wedding venue.
Badlands National Park: Explore an Otherworldly Landscape
Located approximately 60 miles southeast of Rapid City, Badlands National Park offers a mesmerizing landscape of pinnacles, buttes, spires, and canyons that have formed over 75 million years. The park is also home to ancient fossils of saber-toothed cats, three-toed horses, and other prehistoric species.
Beyond its stunning geological formations, Badlands National Park provides excellent hiking trails, wildlife observation, horseback riding, and biking opportunities. Wind Cave National Park: Journey into the Earth
Another of my favourite South Dakota tourist attractions is the Wind Cave National Park. In the UK we are lucky to have some incredible national parks, but this one is really special.
Wind Cave National Park, located in Hot Springs, is the first cave in the world to be designated as a national park. Spanning over 150 miles, it is the sixth-longest cave globally and is renowned for its unique boxwork formations, a rare structure of honeycomb calcite on the cave walls. According to Lakota oral tradition, the cave holds sacred significance as the place from which humans and bison emerged.
While exploring Wind Cave, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the biodiversity of the surrounding prairie. The park offers over 30 miles of hiking trails, allowing you to encounter free-roaming bison, prairie dogs, elk, various bird species, and more. Ranger-guided cave tours are available, but make sure to reserve your spot in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly. Even if you don’t get a chance to tour the cave, the park’s natural beauty and knowledgeable staff make it worth a visit.

National Music Museum: A Melodious Journey
Located at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the National Music Museum recently reopened its doors after extensive renovations. While some of the permanent exhibits remain closed until 2022, the museum hosts various events featuring live musical performances, showcasing different styles and genres.
As exhibits begin to reopen, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the art and craft of musical instruments and their significance in our lives. The museum houses a diverse collection of musical instruments from various cultures and civilizations throughout history. One of the most popular things to do in South Dakota for people who love caves is a visit to Jewel Cave.
South Dakota’s intriguing Jewel Cave, located approximately 50 miles southwest of Rapid City, is the third-longest cave in the world. With more than 210 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, this cave offers an incredible display of colours, delicate formations, and scientific mysteries.
Jewel Cave provides guided cave tours, ranging from moderately difficult to strenuous. The historic lantern tour takes you through low and narrow passages, with the only lighting provided by lanterns. For a more accessible experience, the discovery tour offers a short introduction to the cave, ideal for those with mobility limitations. Visitors highly recommend exploring this otherworldly cave, as it offers a unique experience for families and individuals alike.

South Dakota Air and Space Museum: A Journey Through Aviation History
Located less than 12 miles outside of Rapid City, the South Dakota Air and Space Museum boasts an extensive collection of aircraft, documents, and artifacts that chronicle the history of Ellsworth Air Force Base and its role in the Cold War. From B-29, B-52, and B-1 bombers to Titan I and Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles, the museum offers a comprehensive look into the world of aviation.
While admission to the museum is free, a small fee is required for the bus tour to the missile silo. Keep in mind that the indoor galleries are closed in January and February, and tours of the base and missile silo are only available from mid-May to mid-September. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or a history buff, a visit to the South Dakota Air and Space Museum is an educational and engaging experience.

This paleontological site and museum were discovered in 1974 when a mammoth tusk was unearthed during construction. Since then, ongoing excavations have revealed Ice Age fossils, including mammoths, giant short-faced bears, camels, and more.
Visitors can explore the museum’s exhibits, which provide insights into paleontology, archaeology, and animal tracks. The site also offers various classes, learning activities, and summer programs for those interested in delving deeper into these subjects. The Mammoth Site is open year-round, and admission fees apply.

Spearfish Canyon: Discover Nature’s Splendours
Predating the Grand Canyon, Spearfish Canyon is a hidden gem nestled between Spearfish and Cheyenne Crossing. This awe-inspiring canyon offers a scenic drive through towering limestone cliffs, dense forests of spruces, Ponderosa pines, aspens, and birches. Wildlife sightings, including deer, mountain goats, porcupines, and bobcats, are common in this natural wonderland.
Some of the must-see attractions in Spearfish Canyon include Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, a breathtaking 60-foot waterfall with an observation platform. For the best experience, plan your trip between September and October to witness the stunning fall foliage. While driving through the canyon offers beautiful views, hiking is recommended to fully immerse yourself in the splendour of Spearfish Canyon.
Bear Country USA: Get Up Close with Wildlife
On your way to Mount Rushmore from Rapid City, make a stop at Bear Country USA. This unique wildlife park allows you to experience close encounters with a variety of animals, including black bears, elk, mountain lions, buffalo, and reindeer, all from the comfort of your car. The park also features a Wildlife Walk area, where you can witness demonstrations, programs, and keeper chats.
Bear Country USA provides an opportunity to observe these animals in a more natural setting. While some animals may be sleeping depending on the time of day, the park’s courtesy vehicles are available for those traveling in convertibles, motorcycles, or soft-top vehicles. Admission fees are based on the number of occupants in each vehicle, and the park offers free courtesy vehicles for visitors to use.

Historic Deadwood: Step into the Wild West
An incredible interesting South Dakota tourist attraction is a visit to Deadwood. Established in 1876, Deadwood is a historic Wild West town that was once a bustling gold rush hub. Located about 15 miles southeast of Spearfish, Deadwood offers a unique blend of history and entertainment. Visit Mount Moriah Cemetery to pay your respects to legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Explore the town’s brothel to learn about Deadwood’s colourful past, which included a thriving prostitution industry until 1980.
For a deeper dive into the region’s history, check out the Adams Museum, which showcases artifacts such as a pencil sketch drawing of Wild Bill Hickok and Potato Creek Johnny’s original gold nugget. Deadwood is also home to several casinos, breweries, wineries, and shops where you can find unique souvenirs and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Don’t miss the daily shootout reenactments, which bring the Wild West to life.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally: Experience the Thrill of the Open Road
Every year, Sturgis hosts one of the largest and longest-running motorcycle rallies in the world. Hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists from all over the globe descend upon the small town for the 10-day event, which begins on the first Friday of August. The rally features various events, including an opening ceremony, a pub crawl, a golf tournament, a beard and Mustache contest, and a 5k run. Concerts with both local and internationally renowned bands are also a highlight of the rally.
While Sturgis is primarily known for its motorcycle-related activities, non-bikers also visit the town during the rally to soak in the unique atmosphere. Accommodations fill up quickly, so it’s essential to plan and book in advance. Choose from a range of options, including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, cottages, vacation rentals, campgrounds, and RV parks.
Reptile Gardens: Explore the World of Reptiles
Now, this is not one of my favourite things to do in South Dakota, but it is one of my daughters. I am not really into reptiles, a bit screamy to be honest. But my daughter does love the reptile garden.
Located just 7 miles south of Rapid City, Reptile Gardens holds the distinction of being the world’s largest reptile zoo according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The park houses a vast collection of reptiles, including turtles, tortoises, lizards, crocodilians, and snakes, some of which are considered the world’s deadliest. The botanical gardens surrounding the reptile exhibits showcase a variety of flora and fauna.
Visitors to Reptile Gardens have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. The park offers shows, including bird and snake shows, and provides educational resources about reptiles and their importance in the ecosystem. Whether you have a passion for reptiles or simply want to learn more about these unique creatures, a visit to Reptile Gardens is a must.

Good Earth State Park at Blood Run: Step into Ancient History
South Dakota’s newest state park, Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, offers visitors a chance to explore an important cultural and historical site. This National Historic Landmark is one of the oldest known sites of long-term human habitation in the United States. Between AD 1300 and 1700, the area served as a gathering place for ceremonies and a trading centre for Native American tribes, including the Sioux, Omaha, and Otoe.
The park features a massive visitor centre with exhibits that highlight the historical and cultural significance of the area. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails, fishing spots, picnic areas, and other activities that allow them to connect with nature. Good Earth State Park at Blood Run provides a tranquil and educational experience for those interested in Native American history and the natural beauty of the region.

Needles Highway, located approximately 30 miles south of Rapid City, offers a breathtaking scenic drive through a landscape of towering granite spires. Completed in 1922, this 14-mile byway takes you through sharp turns and narrow tunnels, providing awe-inspiring views at every turn. As you drive, you’ll be surrounded by birch and aspen trees, creating a picturesque backdrop.
Take your time to savour the stunning views along the way but be aware that Needles Highway closes when the first snowfall occurs each year and reopens on April 1st or later, depending on weather conditions. Plan your visit accordingly to witness the beauty of this iconic South Dakota landmark.
Storybook Island: A Magical Adventure for Children
If you’re traveling with children, make sure to visit Storybook Island in Rapid City. This family-friendly theme park, open during the summer season, offers over 100 storybook and nursery rhyme settings where children can play and let their imaginations run wild. The park also features live theatre productions that entertain the whole family.
While some exhibits may show signs of age, as the park has been around for over 60 years, the enchanting atmosphere and interactive displays continue to captivate young visitors. Admission to Storybook Island is free, making it an accessible and enjoyable destination for families with small children.

Visitors are encouraged to touch and even climb on the art, making it a fun-filled destination for families.
Porter Sculpture Park welcomes visitors from mid-May to mid-October, and admission fees apply. The park provides golf carts for those with mobility challenges, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the imaginative and whimsical artwork on display.

Black Elk Peak: Conquer the Highest Point
For avid hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, climbing Black Elk Peak should be on your bucket list. As the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and the Pyrenees Mountains in France, this peak stands at 7,242 feet. From its summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views that stretch across North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Don’t forget to visit the stone fire tower, built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which offers panoramic vistas.
Black Elk Peak offers over a dozen different trails, ranging from 7 to 13 miles round trip. Some trails require paid entry to Custer State Park, so plan accordingly. While some trails feature rocky terrain and steep inclines, the reward of reaching the summit and taking in the spectacular views is well worth the effort.
Butterfly House & Aquarium: A World of Fluttering Beauty
In Sioux Falls, the Butterfly House & Aquarium offers visitors an enchanting experience. Step into a world of vibrant colours as you walk among more than 800 free-flying butterflies. You can even purchase feeding equipment to have the butterflies eating out of your hand. At the aquarium, you’ll be mesmerized by hundreds of species of fish and coral. The Pacific tide pool allows you to see and touch animals found along the coast from Southern California to Alaska.
The Butterfly House offers a serene and calming experience, while the aquarium provides a glimpse into the wonders of the underwater world. This attraction is perfect for both children and adults, and it offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the delicate beauty of butterflies and the diverse marine life found in the aquarium.

Located near Spearfish, the Termesphere Gallery offers visitors a truly unique art experience. The gallery showcases the works of artist Dick Termes, who creates spherical paintings known as termespheres. These intricate pieces provide a three-dimensional exploration of closed universes.
Termespheres are a hidden gem in the Black Hills, and visitors have the opportunity to purchase one of Termes’ pieces through his website. While the gallery is open seven days a week, appointments are required for entrance. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind art experience that challenges your perception, be sure to visit the Termesphere Gallery.

Spirit Mound Historic Prairie: Step into Lewis and Clark’s Footsteps
