San Sebastian, Spain is a popular resort town on the Bay of Biscay in Spain’s mountainous Basque Country. There’s lots of things to do in San Sebastian. 

The popular tourist destination is framed by golden beaches and lush hillsides. It has some of the best restaurants in the world, which is perfect for those that love good food and wine. With San Sebastian, Spain being just ten minutes from the French border, holidaymakers can expect to see a lot of visiting French people coming across the border. 


Getting to San Sebastian 

For those flying from the UK, they will need to fly to Biarritz, which is across the border in France. Biarritz is the nearest airport to San Sebastian. For those people who don’t want to travel by air they can take a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, and then take a bus or train to reach your destination.

There are lots of amazing things to do in San Sebastian, Victoria Eugenia Theatre is just one of them. 

The San Sebastian theatre is one of the city’s most iconic buildings, which first opened its doors back in 1912. It was decided in 1995 the Victoria Eugenia Theatre needed to be refurbished. This was mainly down to modern day health and safety and fire regulations. The refurbishment was finally completed in 2007, providing the stunning building that it is today. 

It may not be the biggest theatre in the world, but Victoria Eugenia Theatre with 910 seats is one of the most stunning. The refurbished theatre is a working theatre and stages several plays, musicals and other events each year.

El Buen Pastor Cathedral 

There are lots of amazing churches in the world, and the El Buen Pastor Cathedral must be right up there with the best of them. 

El Buen Pastor Cathedral was built and designed by architect Manuel de Echave. Construction started in 188 but was not completed until 1897. It was constructed using sandstone from the Monte Igueldo quarries. The Royal family who would spend their summers in the city were invited to the foundation stone laying event.

El Buen Pastor Cathedral receives visitors from all over the world. It takes up a total area of 1915 square metres and has a capacity of 4000 people. One thing that makes the cathedral stand out is one of its towers which is 75 metres high. The cathedral is home to statues of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Santa Teresa, San Antonio, and the Sagrado Corazón.

Monte Igueldo 

If you are looking for the best views over San Sebastian’s coastline then you must visit Monte Igueldo. Here you will be able to see all the coastline and mountains and it truly a photographer’s paradise. 

Those wishing to visit Monte Igueldo can access the mountain via the antique funicular railway. This railway was opened in 1912. You can also visit the El Torreón tower which is a stunning building and dates to the 16th century. 

If you would like to climb the tower for even more amazing views, then you can do this for a small fee. It is truly worth the money and is highly recommended.
