Government Clampdown On Private Car Park Fines

Published on

  • New rules for private parking fines have been brought in

The Government has finally come down on hard on Private Car Parking companies with new rules. However, many of those in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Boston, Scunthorpe, and Skegness who have been stung by private car parking companies feel it is not enough.

Private Parking firms have been told there will now be a 10-minute period of grace for people returning to their vehicles.

Although car owners want to see private parking companies and private car park fines scrapped, the Government have not done that. However, they have restricted fines to a maximum of £50 instead of the current £70, and £100.

One important step until the Government sees sense and bans private car parking fines is the debt collection fee. The Government is looking at banning excessive debt collection fees.

Minister for Levelling Up Neil O’Brien said: “Private firms issue roughly 22,000 parking tickets every day, often adopting a system of misleading and confusing signage, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees designed to extort money from motorists.

“Our new Code Of Practice will set out a clear vision with the interests of safe motorists at its heart, while cracking down on the worst offenders.”

The RAC and The AA have called on the Government to tackle the problem of private companies and the distress they put people through.

RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes told the BBC: “The RAC has campaigned for years to end the sharp practices in the private parking sector, so we welcome the new national code that will usher in higher standards.

“This will undoubtedly make drivers’ experience of using private car parks fairer while at the same time force rogue operators to clean up their acts once and for all.”

People living in Greater Lincolnshire are fed up with the under-hand methods of private parking companies. While the Government have not banned private car parking fans, these measures at least tackle some of the problem. However, more does need to be done according to our readers.
