In 2018, the size of the cosmetics market in Asia Pacific amounted to approximately 120 billion U.S. dollars. This figure was forecasted to reach around 129 billion U.S. dollars by 2020
Have you ever heard of Asian Beauty Products? If not, then where have you been? The Asian Beauty Product market is one of the fastest in the world. Asian beauty products are being used by some of the biggest names in the beauty world, as well as some very well-known celebrities.
We decided we wanted to know more about Asian beauty products, so who better to speak to than Lynn Anna Lafreniere, who is an Asian beauty product expert. Not only is Lynn Anna an expert in Asian beauty, she is also a fashion model living and working in New York City.
The Asian Beauty blog has gained worldwide attention. She provides people with lots of great advice on Asian Beauty product.
You are an Asian beauty products expert, can you explain what that means?
My definition of an Asian beauty expert is someone that spends an endless amount of time learning about Asian skincare methods, brands and ingredients.
When did you start diving into the world of Asian skincare?
For my first trip to Asia, I went to China. I had the amazing opportunity to model in Shanghai for a few months. During my flight I noticed a girl put something on her face that I have never seen before. She told me it was a Dr Morita Hyaluronic Acid Face Mask and she shared about how important it is to keep your skin moisturized during long flights. She was so kind that she gave me one of her masks to try. Trying that mask changed my life!
After that, I made a lot of effort to learn about Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese brands, ingredients and techniques from the professional makeup artists and skincare experts that I would meet.
What are the main benefits of adopting an Asian-inspired skincare regime and can Westerners adopt it?
I noticed that many western products promise to restore damaged skin. Some of these products are amazing. Asian countries also offer a wide range of products that promise to do the same thing. But the major difference is that an Asian skincare regimen is very focused on prevention. You don’t wait until you have visible problems to act. Taking care of your skin at an early age is a very beneficial principle for westerners to adopt.
What are the biggest upcoming Korean skincare and beauty trends?
More products are going to start using a lot more Asian- centric ingredients. For example, a lot of western beauty companies are requesting matcha from Kyoto, Japan and western products are starting to incorporate more fermented ingredients in the formulas. (The fermentation process increases amino acids. Amino acids are super beneficial for the skin.)
China has also introduced a new generation of beauty products to the market. I believe that they will become a new trendsetter in the world of beauty. I recommend trying WEI Beauty for their use of Chinese medicine and culture to create innovative formulas.
What Asian beauty product should someone use if they have acne?
CORSX has amazing products for acne. I also like the Mizon AHA 8% Peeling Serum. However, depending on what kind of acne a person has they may need to see a dermatologist first.
Is an Asian beauty routine expensive to follow?
It doesn’t have to be! There are great brands like Innisfree and Tony Moly that are affordable. Sometimes you can even find great deals on Korean and Japanese face masks online. Face masks by the The Crème Shop are also very affordable and work very well!
I read a celebrity interview where they said they add Ginseng to their Diet to improve their skin, is that just a myth, or does it work?
It’s important to note that things don’t work the same way for everybody and you should always check with your doctor before adding something to your diet. However I personally love ginseng. It helps me to have more energy and it improves my ability to focus during the day. Ginseng is a great ingredient for skincare products. One of my favorite brands Sulwhasoo uses ginseng in their products because of its amazing restorative properties that benefit the skin.
How have you been keeping up with your daily beauty regime during the Covid-19 crisis?
Funny you ask. I think the crisis has helped me to improve my skin and my health. I’ve been drinking a lot of water and eating very healthy foods. Which is just as important for a healthy appearance as using great products is! I’ve also been wearing a lot less makeup and having less exposure to pollution. I think these changes have helped me to get the full benefits of my skin care regimen.
For those people who are still in lockdown, and cannot get to the shops to buy beauty products, what can they do to look after their skin?
One thing I learned from being in lockdown is that it is convenient to order almost everything online. You can order from websites like Revolve and Amazon that offer a wide range of products and fast delivery. For keeping your skin tone even, preventing clogged pores and exfoliating- I like using products with AHA, lactic acid, and glycolic acid. Keep in mind glycolic acid is a bit stronger and is used on congested and dull skin. Another one of my favorite things to do is make beauty masks with natural ingredients that you can usually find in your house. On my blog I share a recipe for an amazing banana and honey face mask that is great for moisturizing your skin.
What is the best beauty product that you own?
I have to say that Dr Morita’s Hyaluronic Acid face mask is probably going to be one of my favorite products for eternity. I also love Sulwhasoo’s Perfecting Cushion Brightening. It gives you this beautiful natural look that’s unmatchable.
What should women avoid to ensure healthy skin?
Definitely avoid drinking alcohol! Or at least try to cut back. Drinking alcohol causes dehydration damage leading to more wrinkles. Also remember to wear SPF outside. Too much UV exposure can cause a lot of damage and premature aging.
What is the best way to get a glowing complexion?
Products with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C always help my skin to glow. I also follow a daily skincare routine consisting of cleansing, toning, using serum or/and essence, exfoliating, using a hydrating moisturizer, and face mists. I do this twice a day and use face mists whenever I feel that my face is too dry.
What are your five favourite Asian beauty products on the market now and why?
I really love all of the products by Sigi Skin right now. They offer an eye mask serum, face mist, cleanser, sunscreen, and an overnight mask. All of these products are amazing and are formulated without toxins
As well as being a beauty expert, you are also a fashion model, how did you get into modelling?
I was scouted at a local fair when I was 16 years old, but my parents wanted me to finish high school before I could try to move to New York City. Being scouted motivated me to do some modeling in Boston, Massachusetts. I really enjoyed walking in runway shows for local designers and doing photoshoots.
After high school I moved to LA to study fashion marketing and ended up signing with a modeling agency while I was in school there. Now I live in New York.
What is the best thing about being a model?
I think the best things about being a model is that I can meet so many talented and creative people, travel and have the opportunities to work with amazing brands.
Some people out there believe being a model is easy work and well-paid, what is the real story?
I want people to know that models have to work very hard. Models have to work really hard to get recognized in the industry in every aspect. Models work hard to maintain their appearance, they go to many castings to try to book jobs, sometimes overwork themselves to get recognition in the Industry, and sometimes face a lot of self-esteem challenges. I have so much respect for how hard these girls work and I wish people understood that becoming a model is a lot more than just being attractive. It’s hard work and dedication.
So, what is next for you?
Having to quarantine for a few months has really inspired me to reevaluate my content.
I really thought about how important it is to not only focus on skincare but how vital it is to also include wellness.
I realized that maintaining our overall wellbeing is often overlooked because of our responsibilities. We need to eat healthy, drink healthy, participate in healthy activities and take care of our mental health in order to get the full benefits from our beauty products and skincare routines. I know this can be challenging for our busy lifestyles.
So I want to take the time to share my favorite wellness tips as well as amazing products and beauty tips. I am really passionate about helping people and I want to do more of that in the future.
