What are the signs of dementia?

NHS urge Lincolnshire families to spot the signs of dementia

The NHS is urging families in Lincolnshire to remain vigilant for common signs of dementia, following new data that reveals a record number of people have been diagnosed with the condition.

  • New data from the NHS has revealed that more people than ever before have a dementia diagnosis.
  • In November, 499,068 people in England received a dementia diagnosis – a jump of 19,416 in a year.
  • A timely diagnosis can mean patients and families can get the right support in place at an earlier stage.
  • The NHS have urged families to look out for common dementia symptoms this Christmas.

In November, 499,068 individuals received a dementia diagnosis, marking an increase of 19,416 within a year. England’s leading dementia doctor has called this a “positive step forward,” as early diagnosis allows patients and families to access essential support sooner.

Ahead of the holidays, Dr. Jeremy Isaacs, NHS England’s national clinical director for dementia, stated: “Dementia often develops gradually and may be difficult to detect during short interactions, but with family and friends possibly gathering at Christmas for the first time in months, there is a chance to recognize the signs.”

Dr. Isaacs added: “Although forgetfulness or absent-mindedness can occur during this busy season, they might also indicate an underlying issue.”

It is important to understand what is Dementia

He emphasized: “Receiving a dementia diagnosis is the first step in providing support, with numerous NHS services available to assist. If you’ve observed symptoms in someone, please encourage them to visit their GP for an assessment—the earlier they’re seen, the quicker the NHS can intervene.”

Understanding Dementia

Dementia is a syndrome characterized by a progressive decline in brain function. England is among the world leaders in dementia diagnosis rates, with research indicating that one in 11 people over the age of 65 in the UK have dementia.

Recognizing Dementia Symptoms

Early symptoms, which might manifest before an official diagnosis, can include:

  • emotional changes such as irritability
  • forgetfulness
  • struggling to follow a conversation or find the right word
  • being confused about time and place

Jennifer Keen, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Approximately one million people in the UK are living with dementia. Christmas should be a joyful time with family gatherings, but for some, it may be when they first notice changes indicating dementia in their loved ones.”

Keen continued: “A third of people with dementia in England are undiagnosed. While getting a diagnosis can be daunting, we believe it’s better to be informed. An early and accurate diagnosis can provide access to essential care, support, and treatment, and help manage symptoms to prevent crises.”

Sadly the number of cases of dementia are growing in Lincolnshire including in Louth, Lincoln, Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Lincoln, Boston, and Skegness
