Rome which is one of the oldest cities in the world, dating back to the 10th century BC is full of history. After more than 2,000 years in existence, with top attractions, there is plenty to see and things to do in Rome. Sadly though, when you go on a cruise holiday you only get one day in port so it’s important to decide which Rome tourist attractions you want to see on your short visit.

Places To Visit In Rome
Colosseum – The Most Famouse Place To Visit In Rome
The colosseum is one of the most famous places Rome to visit and one of the most recognised land marks in the world. As seen in many films, the Colosseum was the place where gladiators, criminals, and lions fought for their lives for the entertainment of the audience. If you are visiting Rome on a cruise ship or even on holiday, the Colosseum has to be on the top of your Rome tourist map list.
Vatican City – A Top Tourist Attraction In Rome
If you are visiting Rome, Italy on a cruise ship then sightseeing in Rome is not complete unless you visit the Vatican City. The Vatican City, which was featured in one of my favourite films The Scarlet and the Black, staring Gregory Peck is full of history.
The Vatican is the smallest independent state in the world which was guaranteed by the Lateran Treaty of 1929. It is ruled by the Pope, supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church. It has an area less than half a square kilometre, with most of it enclosed by the Vatican walls.
Even though the top attraction in Rome is such a small area, it has 11 Vatican Museums. As well as museums, it also has the Vatican radio station and a television station, daily newspaper, post office, shops, offices and a publishing house. The Vatican Radio station is broadcast all over the world in 29 languages.
Visiting the Roman Forum is like going back in time. The impressive sprawl of ruins is a showpiece not to be missed. The site was first developed in 7th century BC and grew over time to become the social, political and commercial hub of the Roman empire where many important decisions were made.
Rome Trevi Fountain
The Trevi fountain has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome. The 17th-century feature has appeared in many films over the years. If you are worried you will never get the chance to visit Rome again, then if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, it is supposed to guarantee your return to Rome.
Rome’s largest fountain was created between 1732 and 1751 by Nicolò Salvi for Pope Clement XII.
San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran)
If you are looking for places to see in Rome full of culture, then the San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran) is the place for you. This is one of Rome’s most impressive churches and one of the best-known churches in the world.
Basilica of St. John Lateran which was completed in 1735 is the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope. Although the church contains the papal throne, the pope rarely visits.
Over the years Basilica of St. John Lateran has had many alterations, but it still retains its original glory.
