Thousands of pensioners across the UK could be missing out on hundreds—sometimes thousands—of pounds every year in extra benefits and pension top-ups they’re entitled to. With the cost of living still squeezing households, it’s never been more important to make sure you’re claiming everything you deserve. Here are the most common underclaimed pension benefits and how to check if you qualify.

1. Pension Credit — The Most Overlooked Top-Up

Pension Credit is one of the most underclaimed benefits in Britain. It’s designed to boost your income if you’re over State Pension age and living on a low income. Yet, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), around 850,000 eligible pensioners still aren’t claiming it.

Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to a guaranteed minimum of £218.15 for single pensioners or £332.95 for couples (as of 2025). Even if you only qualify for a small amount, it can open the door to other valuable benefits, including free TV licences (if you’re over 75), help with rent, and reduced Council Tax.

You can check your eligibility and apply directly on the GOV.UK Pension Credit page.

2. Attendance Allowance — Support for Daily Living

If you’re over State Pension age and need help with personal care because of a long-term illness or disability, Attendance Allowance could give you extra financial support. It’s not means-tested, which means your income or savings won’t affect your claim.

The benefit is worth either £72.65 or £108.55 per week, depending on your level of need. Many pensioners don’t realise they qualify simply because they “manage” day-to-day—but if you struggle with tasks like washing, dressing, or getting around, you could be eligible.

3. Winter Fuel Payment — Up to £500 for Heating Costs

Heating your home during winter has become more expensive than ever. Thankfully, the Winter Fuel Payment can provide between £250 and £500 per household, depending on your age and circumstances. It’s automatically paid to most people over 66 who receive a State Pension or other DWP benefits.

If you don’t automatically receive it, you can easily claim through the Winter Fuel Payment section on GOV.UK.

4. Council Tax Reduction — A Hidden Local Benefit

Many pensioners don’t realise they can apply for a Council Tax Reduction from their local council. Depending on your income, savings, and household situation, you could receive a partial or even full reduction. Some councils also offer extra discounts for single pensioners or those on Pension Credit.

It’s worth visiting your local council’s website and checking the eligibility criteria — you might save hundreds of pounds each year.

5. Free Prescriptions, Eye Tests, and Travel Discounts

Once you hit State Pension age, you’re entitled to a range of free healthcare and travel benefits. These include free prescriptions, free NHS eye tests, and in many regions, free or discounted bus and rail travel. Some local councils and charities also offer “senior saver” schemes for utilities, gyms, or cultural events.

Don’t Miss Out on Money That’s Yours

With billions of pounds in benefits going unclaimed each year, it’s worth taking 10 minutes to check what you’re entitled to. Even small top-ups can make a huge difference over time—especially when they open the door to other support like free dental care, heating payments, or help with housing costs.

If you’re unsure where to start, the Age UK Advice Line (0800 678 1602) can help you check your eligibility and guide you through the application process.

Don’t leave your pension top-ups unclaimed—make sure you’re getting every penny you deserve.
