A WORKER claimed he stole £40,000 from a catering firm to pay off his dad’s gambling debts to Chinese gangsters.

Justin Leigh, 45, embezzled the huge sum from his employer over five years.

But he was caught when chiefs at Scotch Frost of Glasgow Ltd began a probe — and the money was traced to his bank account.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Leigh’s father had got into “significant” debt to organised criminals.

This led to the family being given new IDs and moved to Scotland from England amid cop fears they were in danger.

But Leigh’s lawyer said his father began gambling again and the triads found them and began “intimidating” the family.

Ali Murray, defending, added: “Mr Leigh started diverting funds from his employer and giving it to these individuals.”

Leigh, of Clarkston, near Glasgow, admitted stealing £40,000 from the firm, of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, between 2014 and 2019.

The now restaurant worker was handed 300 hours’ unpaid work and tagged for six months.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Dunipace said: “The circumstances are so unusual.”

Recently we told how a man and woman have been arrested after officers were scrambled to an alleged incident in East Kilbride last night.

A huge police presence attended the scene in the Murray area of the South Lanarkshire town around 8.30pm on Tuesday, June 28.

Seven cop cars and a police van were spotted along Somerville Drive.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and was due to appear in Hamilton Sheriff Court today.
