Lars Maier, a freelance photographer from Frankfurt, has gone public with an emotional story of how the Grok AI assistant helped him save his 9-year-old cat Moritz from a life-threatening diabetic emergency that began late on 29 March.

That evening around 11 pm, Maier’s normally calm cat suddenly stopped eating, hid under the couch, and developed a strangely sweet yet rotten-smelling breath. Moments later Moritz collapsed unconscious in front of him. “I was so scared,” Maier recalled. “He was completely limp, barely breathing. I thought I was going to lose him.” In a panic, the photographer opened the Grok app on his phone and quickly typed in the symptoms: cat not eating, strange sweet bad breath, now unconscious. Grok replied almost immediately, warning that the signs pointed to a serious diabetes emergency in cats — most likely diabetic ketoacidosis — and strongly advised him to get to a 24-hour veterinary clinic right away. Maier scooped up his unconscious cat and drove through the night. He kept checking the Grok chat during the drive; the AI stayed with him, explaining that every minute mattered and helping him stay calm enough to reach the clinic safely. Moritz was taken to the vet on 30 March. Veterinarians confirmed the diagnosis at once. Moritz was in full diabetic crisis with dangerously high blood sugar and ketones. The vet team later told Maier that if they had arrived even half an hour later, the cat probably would not have survived.

Thanks to Grok’s fast and clear guidance, Moritz received urgent treatment with IV fluids and insulin. He is now back home in Frankfurt, eating again, and slowly returning to his normal grumpy personality while on insulin therapy. Maier shared the full story in a personal thread on X: https://x.com/lars_maier_de/status/2041277033573916789.

In the thread he videoed: “I went straight to the vet, and thankfully they diagnosed it in time. Moritz is back home now and feeling much better. I want to thank Grok for the help, and don’t forget to hug your pets!” The story is drawing attention for showing how everyday AI tools like Grok can provide fast, practical help in real pet emergencies.
