Spanish Airport Strike Dates Revealed

Workers at Spanish airport operator Aena have agreed on a wave of new strikes which could result in holidaymakers visiting Spain over the coming months facing some serious delays.

The 24-hour strikes which will start from September and will run all the way through to the end of December could see some flights to popular resorts cancelled.

José Luis Zoreda of Spain’s tourism association Exceltur said tourists would face atrocious scenes if an agreement is not reached.

The planned strikes are already causing chaos with travel agents receiving a huge increase in calls from people worried the strikes would affect their holiday. The strikes which will lead to delays, cancellations and a reduction in safety have forced tens of thousands of people from the UK to change their holiday plans with many choosing to take a holiday in the UK.

Unions have said Aena’s 7,3000-person workforce have not benefited from company profits and their hardworking members should receive a better pay package and better working conditions.

Workers’ Commissions, UGT, and USO have said the strikes will go ahead unless an agreement is made for an improvement to pay and conditions. The union wants to see an extra 700 more people employed with all members receiving an 8% pay rise.

24-hour stoppages are scheduled to take place on the following dates:

  • September: 15, 17, 22, 24 and 29.
  • October: 1, 6, 11, 15, 27, 30, and 31.
  • November: 3 and 5.
  • December: 1,4,5,7, 8, 10, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30.

Spain tourist experts have warned the strikes will affect the country’s economy and could damage tourism for years to come. Many believe with the continued strikes over recent years, it could put off millions of people visiting Spain and instead see them booking holidays in another country.
