Thomas Cook Take Action Against Liverpool Family Over False Holiday Sickness Claims

A family from Liverpool could face up to six years in prison after being accused of making a false holiday compensation claim.

The family of three, Deborah Briton, 53, her partner Paul Roberts, 43, and their daughter Charlene, 30, are accused of making a false compensation claim against Thomas Cook in a bid to gain a payout of £52,000. All three who appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court have pleaded not guilty to six counts of fraud

Deborah Britton and her partner are accused of making false sickness claims for two all-inclusive holidays they took in Majorca. The couple who went on holiday with their two children claim they became ill while on holiday.

The couple submitted a claim for compensation for themselves and on behalf of their two young children after claiming the bug ruined their holiday.

Charlene is accused of making a separate claim for her and her young daughter for a holiday they took last year.

There has been a huge increase in the number of false holiday claims over the past 12 months, with ABTA reporting that Spanish hotels are being forced to pay out £50m each year. As a result of the false sickness claims, hotels in Spain are considering removing all-inclusive holidays for British holidaymakers.

Thomas Cook has said they will fight false sickness claims, while the government has said they are taking more action against those trying to profit from false claims.

A pre-trial hearing will take place on August 10.
