Lincolnshire Police have released details where 240 knives have been surrendered
Lincolnshire Police who set up an important campaign to get knives off the streets of Lincolnshire have made an important announcement that will shock many of those living in the area.
Since they launched their Op Sceptre week of action campaign, they have taken 240 knives off the streets of Lincolnshire.
As part of the campaign, nine “surrender bins” were set up at police stations across Lincolnshire which included Boston, Skegness, Sleaford, Louth, Spalding, Horncastle, Grantham, Stamford and South Park.
The successful campaign has come at a time when knife crime has risen in the UK and has become a serious problem.
Lincolnshire, The UK and the world were shocked when a 12-year-old girl was stabbed to death during an argument in a city centre of Liverpool.
Four teenage boys, aged between 13 and 15 and from Toxteth, have been arrested on suspicion of her murder.
Thanks to Lincolnshire Police and their Op Sceptre week of action campaign, they have helped to make the streets of Lincolnshire a little bit safer.
246 weapons were anonymously handed in. Some of those weapons include flick knives, swords, and other bladed instruments banned under the Offensive Weapons Act.
A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “Weapon-enabled crime in our county is low in comparison to other parts of the country – but we are not complacent, and one knife is one too many.
“Now, our communities can feel even more reassured about the safety of our streets following a successful week of action to reduce knife crime which saw more than 240 blades handed in to stations across the county.
“This type of opportunity enables weapons to be safely removed from the streets and out of the hands of potential offenders.”
As part of the campaign, Lincolnshire police officers have carried out 35 stop and searches. Those stop and searches resulted in five knife-related arrests. Four weapons were also recovered from someone carrying them while on the street, and six further weapons related arrests were made by offered which resulted in another three knives being recovered.
The knife problem in the UK has become a worrying and serious problem. There have been calls to bring in stricter laws to combat the problem. Many experts and those who have been affected by knife crime want to see the Government bring in stricter sentences.
At the moment the maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is 4 years in prison and an unlimited fine.
