Tens of thousands of Royal Mail workers are set to go on strike after failing to reach an agreement over pay
It has today been announced that postal workers have voted in favour of strike action. More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers could walk out this summer of a dispute over pay.
According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), 97.6% of members voted in favour of strike action which could affect Manchester, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Lincoln, Blackpool, Skegness, and the rest of the country.
Although Royal Mail workers have voted in favour of strike action, CWU has said that no date for industrial action has been set.
Strike action which was due to take place this Wednesday was called off at the last minute by Unite after new proposals were put forward.
General secretary Dave Ward said there will now be a “small window” of opportunity for talks to avoid walkouts before strike dates are set.
He said postal workers received big support from the public for their efforts during the pandemic and would continue to receive backing for their pay campaign.
“While bosses rake in £758m in profit and shareholders take £400m, workers are expected to take a serious real-terms pay cut,” he added.
“Postal workers won’t accept their living standards being hammered by bosses who are typical of business leaders today – overpaid, underqualified, out of their depth.”
While the Royal Mail strike action will have little affect on residential customers, it could seriously affect small business owners.
