In celebration of the start of the Women’s Euro’s, fifteen pubs in Greater Manchester will be giving out free pints to punters this July.

The catch? You’ll need to have the right surname in order to get a freebie, because it’s all about supporting the Lionesses.

The promotion, launched by pub chain Greene King, is offering pub-goers with the same surname as the competing team members the chance to enjoy a pint on them this month.

Pints will be available on select days throughout July, with the first freebies kicking off on Wednesday 6 to coincide with the first Women’s Euro’s match.

The first group game kicks off with England going up against Austria at 8pm. Anyone who shares a family name with one of the players simply needs to show their photo ID during the match at a participating pub to get a drink on the house.

There are two further matches taking place this month, England v Norway on 11 July and England v Northern Ireland on 15 July.

The Greater Manchester pubs taking part in the promotion are as follows:

Lass O’Gowrie (Manchester)Flying Horse (Heald Green)Kings Ransom (Sale)Bent Brook (Urmston)Flag (Egerton)George & Dragon (Hazel Grove)Bulls Head (Hazel Grove)Matchstick Man (Salford)Knowsley (Bury)Robin Hood (Tottington)Romiley Arms (Romiley)Rose & Crown (Bury)Royal Oak (Chorlton Cum Hardy)Wellington (Bury)Ye Olde Cock (Didsbury)

The campaign has been designed to create some momentum around the Women’s Euro’s matches, as historically there tends to be more interest in men’s football matches – as seen last year with the whitewashing of the women’s teams achievements from the 2021 men’s Euro’s coverage.

Despite never winning the tournament, the England women’s team has been to the Euros eight times and have reached the final twice. During the men’s 2020 tournament, it was widely reported that England had not been in the finals since 1996 -despite the women’s team coming second in 2009.

It’s hoped that the offer of a free pint might do something to help British football fans better remember the women’s team after a survey showed Brits are nearly three times more likely to have heard of a male England footballer than their female counterparts.

These are the surnames who qualify for the free drink:
