The family of a woman with a “fabulous smile” who sadly died when a bus crashed into a shelter in Piccadilly Gardens on Sunday evening has paid an emotional tribute to her.

60-year-old Joyce Bacon from Droylsden was returning home with her husband on Sunday after they had been to watch the new Top Gun: Maverick film when the horrific collision occurred at around 9:25pm in the Piccadilly area of the city, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has since confirmed.

Initial enquiries established that a double decker bus had collided with three pedestrians – but despite the best efforts of emergency services, Joyce sadly died at the scene.

Joyce’s husband Ian has now paid tribute to his wife.

He said: “Joyce was a loving mother, sister and wife. She was always busy and she loved to take care of people. She was very generous by nature just like her mother. She won over people instantly with her fabulous smile.

“We will all miss her so much, especially me.”

Ian particularly made sure to thank the emergency services in his tribute, who he said “fought to save Joyce” and supported everyone who was involved in “this terrible incident”.

He added: “Those who had the pleasure of meeting Joyce are devastated by our loss, and we therefore ask for privacy at this time to allow us to grieve.”
