The UK is known for its amazing architecture and stunning stately homes, so we have decided to have a look at the best manor houses (country houses) near London. We have put together a list of manor houses within 90-minutes of London that are available to visit.

In the mid-19th century, there were more than 5,000 manor houses. However, thousands of those stately homes have been torn down. Sadly, in 2020 there are now only around 3,000 left. One of the main reasons why so many of Britain’s manor houses have been torn down is down to finances. Although the stately homes look stunning, they are expensive to sustain.

The largest stately home in the UK is Wentworth Woodhouse, which is near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The stately home has 365 bedrooms and believe it or not it has 5 miles of corridors.  It was sold in 2016 to a trust for £7million with £3.5million funded by National Heritage Memorial Fund.
