A traditional afternoon tea in the garden of the Bishop of Ely’s house in the shadow of the cathedral was “just perfect” said one of the invited guests.

For the past 12 years a team of volunteers, with the support of Ely Cathedral, has organised a community traditional Christmas Day lunch for those in need of food, company, or both. The afternoon tea on Wednesday (6th July) was a first summertime venture following a decision last year to extend the scope of the project and establish Ely Community Lunches as a charity.

Chairman Canon James Reveley, welcoming everyone, said plans were being made for an event around harvest festival time as well as Christmas 2022.

He gave special thanks to Spikes, the King’s Ely cello ensemble led by the school’s Head of Strings Nikki Porter-Thaw.

Sallyann Ford, a member of the Ely Community Lunches Committee whose members are drawn from different church in the city, said: “The tea party was a chance to meet up with some of those who’ve enjoyed lunches with us for many years and also to say ‘thank you’ to those who have supported us with donations of festive food and goodies for Christmas.”
