Liverpool Crown Court has jailed an Aldi manager who stole £84k from her store to feed her drug habit and buy flash sports cars.

Louis Mulholland, 35, set alarm bells ringing when the £40,000 a year store manager started to drive around in flash sports cars and started to spend beyond her means.

The drug addict of Pleasant Street, Bootle, Merseyside had a promising career in the retail group until she became greedy and started to steal the takings. However, that promising career came to an end when members of her staff started to get suspicious when their Aldi store manager began driving around in flash sports cars.

Louis was always keen to buy her staff drinks on nights out and always had wads of cash in her handbag.

Andrew Ford, prosecuting, said Mulholland was manager at the Aldi store in St John’s precinct, Liverpool city centre, when she began to steal from the company.

He said in April 2012, records showed there should have been between £80,000 – £90,000 in the safe at the Liverpool Aldi store. However, Louis Mulholland found a way of beating an accounting vulnerability, which allowed her to steal the cash without anyone noticing.

Andrew Ford explained, Louis Mulholland, Noticed a problem in the accounting system, and doctored details on the deposit slips to show the takings and deposits were accurate. She took advantage of the accounting problem and lived beyond her means.

He added: “She lost control of proper responsibility for money and her colleagues which is what Class A drugs can do.”

Louis Mulholland denied dishonesty and claimed it was down to Aldi sloppy procedures and the computer system.

The former Liverpool Aldi Manager was found guilty of two counts of theft after a Liverpool Crown Court trial.

Sentencing her Judge Thomas Teague, QC, said: “You are an extremely capable, highly intelligent woman of very considerable ability.

“If you had not resorted to dishonesty you might have gone far in the retail business.

“Unfortunately you became reckless, taking drink and drugs and went out of control.”

Louis Mulholland was jailed for two-and-a-half-years.
