Since the days when This Morning Fern Britton finally admitted she had Gastric Bypass Surgery to have a Gastric Band fitted to lose weight, the operation has become widespread news helping the private sector who provide Gastric Band Operations to people who have been turned down on the NHS gain free publicity thanks to the former This Morning presenter. But according to one woman who had Gastric Bypass Surgery, it was the worse mistake of her life.
Joanna McDermott paid £8,500 to have a Gastric Band fitted after the NHS turned her down, but according to Joanna the gastric Band Operation was the biggest waste of money she has every spent.

As well as it costing her £8,500, Joanna said it also cost her self respect and her marriage as well as causing her a great deal of pain which resulted in her having to have another operation to have the Gastric Band removed.
All Joanna McDermott wanted was to look and feel great and she thought that by having a Gastric Band fitted, she would become her ideal weight, what she was not expecting was to be in a great deal of pain and to turn her happy marriage into a marriage from hell.
Joanna weighed more than 20 stone and wanted to be slim like most women in the world so she turned to the operation, which The Department of Health has said, should be a last resort due to the nature of the surgery. Her dreams of becoming thin like Fern Britton did not happen and instead she suffered a great deal of pain.
"Having the gastric band fitted has ruined my life," says Joanna. "Not only has it been a waste of money, but I've never felt so sick in my life. I wish I'd never had it done."
"Since the Gastric Band operation , I've never had a full week when I've been able to keep every meal down," she says. "And there have been times when I could not even drink anything because it would all come straight back up."
As a result of the operation, which caused her a great deal of pain, Joanna became stressed and as a result of the operation her happy marriage ended in divorce.
"I used to be a happy-golucky person. Now I'm a prisoner in my own home. I don't even like driving as I feel the stomach pains are so bad they make me unsafe."
"Ironically, the only food I can eat without being sick is chocolate," she says. "And I can only keep that down if I melt it first. The problem is that it's very high in calories."
Joanna has now arranged to go under the knife once more to have the Gastric Band removed.
