Soap Gossip. Coronation Street Rita has been on the shelf for a very long time but now it seems Rita could become a married woman after producer Phil Collinson has told script writers to come up with a romantic plot.
Phil Collinson has said that he wants Rita to have some happiness and that happiness comes in the form of old flame Dennis Tanner who returned to the soap early this year.
The Producer told Inside Soap: "Rita genuinely loves Dennis very much. Their storyline harks back to 1964, when he looked after her and took her in. Now he's grown to love her because she's been able to look after him.
"I like that we can tell a love story of people in their 70s, and it's a relationship that we're really committed to. I'd love for Rita to have a wedding, so watch this space! And if we did have one, she'd be Mrs Tanner - how great is that?"
It is not only the producer who thinks the romance between Rita and Dennis is a good idea, the actor who plays Dennis, Philip Lowrie has said he would love for the couple to get together.
The actor recently said that he hopes to be in the soap for a very long time and said how much he is enjoying being back on the street.
If Rita and Dennis do get together then it is sure to put a certain corner shop owners nose out of joint.
