Biggest Loser has been a huge hit around the world but not for one former Biggest Loser contestant who hoped appearing on the show would result in her losing weight and keeping the weight off.
Renee Wilson who appeared on the American version of the show in 2008 lost 106 pounds during a six month period and finished fourth place.
“It was very successful,” Renee recalled but added. “It was a lot of work.”
Renee was working out 12 to 14 hours a day to lose the weight but by the time she was axed from the Biggest Loser show she weighs 160 pounds and reality kicked in, there was no way in real laugh she could spend 12 to 14 hours a day working out while trying to hold down a job.
“Coming back home and going to a regular 9 to 5 job and work and working out,” Renee admitted. “It was a little difficult.”
Everything was going fine Renee said but then disaster struck, she had an accident while exercising which made it hard for her to keep up with her exercising like she was doing on the Biggest Loser show.
The Biggest Loser contestant said:
“I’ve yo-yoed from 40 to 20 to 20 more and 20 less but when you can’t move it’s hard to work out or do anything like that.”
After becoming frustrated with not being able to lose the weight she wanted to lose, the former Biggest Loser contestant decided that she would turn to Gastric Banding.
The gastric banding operation has helped thousands of women to lose weight and Renee decided she wanted to try out the operation in the hope it would help her.
The former Biggest Loser contestant said she was told a Gastric Band operation would help her lose 75% of her weight and decided this would be the best option for her, although she later said that she did not know that Gastric Hypno Band technique could have done the same job.
Dr Clayton Frenzel from the Forest Park Medical Centre said that Renee’s situation was not unusual.
“Renee is a very typical patient,” Dr. Frenzel said. “The majority of my patients before they come to see me have spent 5 to 10 years or longer either through dieting or exercising–getting personal trainers and even using prescription weight loss medication.”
Dr. Frenzel said obesity can make exercise difficult and can also make it painful.
“It’s very typical of many patients after they lose about 30 to 50 pounds their exercise capability goes up significantly and that of course helps with the weight loss,” Dr. Frenzel said. Renee’s husband Roderick said her back injury was a major setback but simply finding time to exercise in ordinary life is difficult.
“You have a regiment, you have a routine and now to make the transition to come back home and to be able to fit that into your everyday life,” Roderick said. “I think that was one of the challenges.”
Three years removed from The Biggest Loser–Renee hopes surgery will turn finally turn TV reality into a storybook ending.
The Biggest Loser contestant said that she hopes this will now result in her becoming slim and healthy without worrying about dieting.
“I feel like this is a new chapter in my life,” Renee said. “Hopefully it will just help me keep my weight at a manageable place.”
Claire Hegarty a leading Gastric Band Hypnosis expert said that Renee could have opted for the cheaper and safer weight loss option of having the Trance Band technique which is a hypnotherapy technique that allows you to lose weight without dieting and without surgery.
The weight loss expert said that she could have had hypnosis done for her weight loss gain which would have allowed her to eat less and become full more quickly without the need for gastric banding.
