Penguin Books are proud to be publishing Kevin Lewis’ new novel FALLEN ANGEL. Kevin's most famous for his autobiographical book THE KID which sold half a million copies in the UK alone, spent an incredible 26 weeks in the top 10 and was hailed as “incredible, a fantastic story” by Fern Britten.

Published in 2003, THE KID was the first instantly successful ‘misery memoir’ to be published in the UK, and pioneered a new genre in literature. It is the harrowing true story of Kevin's childhood and teenage experiences in Lewisham in an abusive family and within foster care. At 17, in a desperate attempt to raise money to stay off the streets Kevin got caught up in the criminal underworld where he was known as 'The Kid', also earning money by bare knuckle fighting. He started suffering from bulimia and, at his lowest ebb, attempted to take his own life.

Astonishingly against all odds and with great courage and determination, Kevin succeeded in turning his life around, becoming a hugely successful author. Kevin is also currently heavily involved in the pre production of the forthcoming film of THE KID, directed by Nick Moran (‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’).

Kevin is now one of Penguin’s bestselling crime fiction authors and is already firmly established as a bestselling crime talent to watch, not least because he knows very well what it's like to be on the wrong side of the law - something not many crime novelists can claim!

Kevin’s new novel FALLEN ANGEL draws on his own experiences growing up on a sink estate in South East London, but this time on the right side of law. It's the first novel in a new series which will feature DI Stacey Collins. She's in her 30s, a single mum, and a gritty, hard-nosed detective in the Metropolitan Police. Having grown up on one of the worst estates in South London, she's no stranger to the darker underworld of London crime. Her gangland connections and her past means she's seen as something of an outsider in the force, a maverick who operates outside of traditional police procedures. It is also a gritty and realistic depiction of the challenges faced by a single working mum successfully tackling serious crime for a living, but finding it difficult to manage her own wayward teenage daughter. A daughter increasingly drawn to the quasi-family environment offered by gang life on the estate.

Kevin says “I wanted to keep writing about what I know best – the sprawling and nasty urban estates, the crime and brutality of the gangs and the harsher realities of London life.”

FALLEN ANGEL by Kevin Lewis is published on the 7th August 2008 by Penguin Books priced £6.99
